What do you need for a website?

Things you need to have an online website

Having a working website online is crucial for any business nowadays. At first, launching a website might seem like a complicated process to some people with less technical knowledge, but no worries! After reading this article you will have a good understanding of what exactly is needed in order to start your online journey.

1. Hosting

Hosting is the most important thing which is needed in order for your website to be online so that other people from all around the world could access your website on the internet. When purchasing a hosting subscription you are essentially renting space on a web server for your website. On that server, all of your website’s files would be stored which would allow other people visit your website online. There are hundreds of hosting providers so which one you would choose is completely up to you. Bellow we will list 3 of our recommendations:

Bluehost is our third recommended option and is also a very well-known company in the hosting industry. All of their hosting plans also come with a control panel already preinstalled so users are able to easily control their hosting and domain services not matter what their level of technical knowledge is. Their servers also have a great up time of 99.9% which means that your websites will be up and running without any major downtimes or other server related issues.

  • Great server up time of 99.9%
  • Easy-to-use interface
  • One click WordPress installation

2. Domain name

After renting a server to host your website you will need to get a domain name. Domain name is essentially an address of your website which will be linked to your hosting server. It allows people from all around to visit your website (which is hosted on the server that you have rented) by entering your registered domain name into their browsers. When registering a domain name you will also be able to choose TLD (Top Level Domain), which is an extension that comes after your domain name itself.

The most popular and trusted TLDs are: .com, .net, .store and .org, though there are hundreds of other ones you can choose from, so even if yourdomain.com is already taken, you will still be able to try and register yourdomain.net or yourdomain.org. ccTLD is a country specific top level domain name which can be used instead of a regular TLD. Examples of ccTLD would be: .ru (russia), .us (United States), .cn (China) and so on. Keep in mind that most ccTLD domains may need extra documents proving that you are really a resident of that country.

Most of the hosting providers provide domain registration services as well (3 of our mentioned ones included) and we recommend getting domain name from the same provider as you got your hosting plan, so all of your services would be accessible from the same account. After registering your domain name you will need to connect it to your hosting server on which your website is hosted. This process is called “domain pointing” and if you are not sure how it is done, we have a great article explaining this simple process and other things related to it.

And that is it! Hosting and Domain name are 2 essential things which are needed in order to have your website online and accessible to others.
